Kim Geon-Il is continuously asking himself what is the 'existence of objective forms' through his artwork series 'Distortion' and 'Forest'. His unique perspective on objects led to invitations from a number of named galleries and cultural foundations, moreover, Merk, a leading German clothing company with a history that span 350 years, proposed him to be a major role as an ambassador to promote Korean culture through a calendar campaign. Through this campaign, he was introduced as an 'artist who paints the invisible’ and made a strong impression in the art scene with his unique character in which Eastern and Western paintings coexist.
Kim Geon-Il's landscape painting is not a real landscape, but a landscape in the artist's imagination.Rather than the object exisiting in reality, he embodies the subject who looks at the object, that is, the heart of the artist himself through his artwork. The 'memory', the key motive of his artwork, was visualized on the canvas when he met the object of 'forest' at last.
If you walk through a desolate forest, you may come across many unexpected elements, such as creatures you have never seen before and lush bushes. As for memories, the more you dig down into them, the more imperfections that change according to your heart or desire revealed, rather than a simple story. Just as we enter the forest and meet the unexpected elements outside the forest, likewise, our memories have such aspects. To express the correlation between memory and the forest, he draws by filling the canvas with green paint and erasing it with a cloth. On top of that, paint is laid again and then erased to overlap images. This is similar to the process of uncovering memories and facing the revealed mind.
Kim Geon-Il hopes that we can look into our own hearts and communicate what we see through his artworks.
He is a contemporary artist who majored in oriental painting at Seoul National University and earned a master's degree at the same university's graduate school. Since 2003, he has held in more than 20 solo exhibitions and 100 group exhibitions, and has participated in numerous biennales and art fairs in Korea and overseas, including the '2015 Chennai Chamber Biennale', leaving a strong impression in the art scene. His artworks are owned by leading institutions including National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Art Center White Block, Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art, and GANA Art Residential.
