- Artist Choi Seungyoon, says that his work is ‘A Story about myself and the World’. He also mentioned, “I study the world and interpret myself based on it. On the contrary, I study myself to learn about the world and I express the rules of the world I found out in paintings.”
The world is always ambivalent. It is a world of balance where polarities coexist, such as the universe and life, yin and yang, and the beginning and the end. His paintings contain those order of the world. The painting, which started from rift of the paradox, expands to fill the rift and belch vitality as if it will be forever. His lines and spaces move, collide, harmonize, and come to life on the canvas. He thinks that a painting is a living creature or a universe. In order to create a life, he thought the rules of the world had to be embody in a painting, and the rule of the world he thought of were ‘Rule of Opposite’. He has been working on themes of the Beginning of the Stop, Paradox of Movement, Cross-section of the Moment, Paradox of Time and Space, and Paradox of Equality and Difference.
He uses color ‘blue’ the most because it best fits his concept that paradox is the basis of the world. Blue is generally defined as cool color tone, but paradoxically, the hottest part of fire appears to be blue. By the Rule of Opposite, he is expanding his universe by the rule of the world, for instance, various colors appearing after monochrome and colorful paintings hiding behind a simple painting.
To commune with painting, he discarded brush but customized the tools accordingly. Customized tools such as spatula and wipers, draw and layer various lines to embody explosive energy. In order to create a transparent mood, creating own paints by mixing various materials with existing paints is needed.
In the social media generation, Choi Seungyoon is actively using YouTube channels to promulgate his artwork world and philosophy. Through his YouTube channel named ‘최승윤 작가Artist Choi seungyoon’, he conveys his thoughts about the art world and his artwork in general. Currently, he has uploaded more than 1,000 videos and has nearly 20,000 subscribers.
Choi Seungyoon has graduated from Seoul National University of Science & Technology, Department of Fine Arts. After working as a 9th resident artist of Youngeun Artist-in-Residence, he was selected as the 2017 Gyeomjae artist of tomorrow and in 2018, he performed 20 domestic and overseas exhibitions including Art Busan and Hongkong Asia Contemporary Art Show, Malaysia ART EXPO PLUS. In addition, collaboration with companies such as ‘THE FRAME’ with Samsung TV in 2017, ‘Icos’ with Philip Morris in 2018, were endeared. His work are collected in major countries around the world, including United States, England, France, as well as other leading national and public art museums such as Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art.
