Artist Park Sanghyeok majored in fine arts at Braunschweig University of Art in Germany. Since he initially sketched a character 'Nemonane' for animation work in 2022, he has continued to create in various artworks such as painting, sculpture and digital art with Nemonane motif for the past 20 years. He asked himself “what position am I in the community as an individual?” He began to think about his identity and dignity, and sublimated that thought into the artworks through Nemonane.
Nemonane, the prime motif of his artworks as well as his alternate character, is not only the artist today but also a character derived by drawing on his childhood memories and experiences and his imagination. Nemonane has a large square head, a square body and square eyes. Although he has a human form at a glance, the understated colors of black and white only, geometric body shapes, and glossy surface textures give it an artificial feeling. His appearance is the one we saw in childhood cartoons between Robert and human being. With an impassive face and blunt body, Nemonane has a warm and pure charm inside, and neither a boy nor an adult, he resembled Peter Pan, a boy who never grows up.The concept of “Borderline” is the core of all his artistic activities. He defines the “Borderline” that does not belong to either side as an “Edge”. Edge series, which has been drawn for many years with various mediums such as pencil, acrylic and watercolor, has been depicted the scenic vista seen in and around Seoul and Yangpyeong in his unique visual language. The simple lines and squares on the mountains and fields indicate man-made roads and architectures, a landscape where civilization has penetrated into nature, and the point where nature and humans meet each other. He refers to these landscapes as “Borderline” between nature and civilization.
Nemonane is always alone, but not lonely. His own world is in nature full of green, and his daily life is peaceful, and he is living together his animal friends. Nemonane sees the unremarkable landscape and the repetitive daily life through the eyes of a pure and innocent boy. A deer he meets in the forest greets him, a bear hugs and consoles him, and Nemonane climbs the hill holding hands with his beloved dog, Sani. Emotions such as fear, curiosity, sympathy and love for animals are delicately depicted in his artworks. Nemonane who seems alienated from human society, seeks the value in a world of his own rather than a hectic society, and his world full of warmth embraces imagination, dreams and hope. His paintings with rich and beautiful colors contain the relationship and love between Nemonane and the animals.
Park Sanghyeok’s representative artwork series, PN series, is depicted Projected Nemonane, which is abbreviated as PN. They all have the same composition, only the size of Nemonane changes depending on the canvas. It is a painting work that replaces the state that changes due to various external factors in the relationship between the individual and society with colors and surfaces composed of internal logic. The uniqueness of a character is the result of time piled up through different densities. It is the artist’s pictorial attempts to reach his identity.
Park Sanghyeok has been interested in photography and digital art since his days in Germany, and he is one of the pioneers who attempted to introduce NFT into art scene. He has minted his crypto art pieces, an extension of the PN series, at marketplace of OpenSea.
